The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery (GFEMS) is a bold public-private partnership that seeks to catalyze and coordinate a coherent global strategy to tend modern slavery. Our mission is to end modern slavery by making it economically unprofitable.
GFEMS will make grants across sectors and geographies with a focus on three core funding themes: rule of law, business engagement, and sustaining freedom. Sixteen million of the 25m victims of forced labor globally are estimated to be in private sector supply chains. The top sectors include construction, domestic work, manufacturing, agriculture, and hospitality. Business leadership and proactive business engagement is needed to generate market-based solutions to end modern slavery.
You will join a newly formed entrepreneurial team of development professionals, finance professionals, and strategy consultants within the fund. The team’s goal will be to identify, create, build, and execute win-win investment deals and business cases for the private sector to invest in slavery-free supply chains. This will involve the development of public-private partnerships (PPPs), project finance deals, and patient capital investments -- initially through innovative use of grant funding to research, seed and catalyze such investments.
Additionally, the DC-based hire will also support corporate-level business engagement, in order to mobilize private sector partners willing to support the Fund’s development and piloting of tools and other resources to identify and mitigate forced labor in supply chains.
In collaboration with senior management, develop strategy and hypotheses on PPPs that will create economic incentives and market-based solutions for businesses to contribute to a world free from modern slavery
Lead the development of investment and business cases to efficiently test the team’s hypotheses, including detailed financial valuation and social impact modelling of public private partnerships
Gather data utilizing creative and collaborative means, working seamlessly across public and private stakeholders, demonstrating political and cultural sensitivity
Provide analytical ‘horsepower’ to test and refine strategies for business engagement across the fund’s core country and industry investments
Coordinate, facilitate and collaborate to create multi-stakeholder alignment and collective action around core PPP ideas.
Develop detailed and compelling presentations to inspire, attract, engage corporations and governments on our strategy
Project manage pilot execution of promising PPP ideas and support in fundraising and advocating
Perform other duties as requested
Additional scope for DC-based hire (up to 50%)
Through corporate partners, support the testing, implementation, and integration of forced labor risk assessment tools into companies’ current system of risk to identify “hotspots” and prioritize areas of focus.
In cooperation with senior operating executives, co-develop and estimate costs required to implement risk mitigation strategies to address identified risks.
In partnership with academic and research partners, co-develop and pressure-test economic models demonstrating the value of addressing forced labor risk in a company’s supply chain
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) with an excellent academic record in Business, Finance, Economics, Human Rights / Development Studies, or other relevant field. Advanced degree in Business or Finance strongly preferred.
At least 5 years experience in the development of public-private partnerships, patient capital or frontier markets investing, or similar business case development; exceptional modelling and valuation expertise preferred
Direct experience in private equity or venture capital, strategy consulting, or development finance institutions strongly preferred
Demonstrated subject matter expertise or direct experience in the intersection of human rights and business (with an understanding of how protecting human rights affects supply chain sustainability); experience in ESG a plus
Experience in the project management cycle
Proven analytical and problem-solving skill-set in uncertain environments
Demonstrated ability to present information (written and verbal, in English) in an insightful, clear, structured manner
Action- and results-oriented; driven to catalyze real world impact
Prior experience in working cross-culturally and working with both public and private sectors in the developing world
Entrepreneurial aptitude; able to independently identify tasks, priorities, and find creative ways to get things done
