GFEMS will make grants across sectors and geographies with a focus on three core funding themes: rule of law, business engagement, and sustaining freedom. The Strategy & Programs Associate will be an integral part of the Fund’s programs team, making significant contributions to GFEMS’ funding strategy. The ideal candidate is hypothesis-driven, self-directed, confident, culturally sensitive, and inquisitive. You will apply rigorous, structured problem-solving to one of the world's most challenging and complex problems. Through directed strategy assignments in priority geographies and industries, you will work with incomplete data sets (filling in blanks through triangulation and other market sizing technique) and other inputs to develop and test hypotheses to reduce the prevalence of modern slavery. You will also engage directly with key stakeholders (including senior leadership) to help shape future interventions and innovations for funding.
With oversight and guidance from the Director of Strategy & Programs, conduct research and analysis to support opportunity identification and strategy development for the Fund’s overall portfolio, to support grantee or research strategy, and/or to ensure alignment with donor priorities
Effectively seek out untapped data sources in service of Fund and grantees design and execution; coordinate and participate in expert interviews and other primary research
Manage outreach to key stakeholders/informants to gather data and insights relevant to programming strategy; identify key players, craft interview guides, facilitate and conduct field visits
Support Programs team to maintain living landscape analysis of relevant partners and other stakeholders across the Fund’s priority countries and industries
Distill and package analysis into hypothesis-driven recommendations in formats conducive to strategic discussion and decision-making
Review potential partner proposals and help assess their ability to contribute effectively to a coherent sector-level strategy, including testing assumptions related to impact, effectiveness and scalability
Develop frameworks to help simplify complex data, insights, recommendations, trends, etc for both internal use and public dissemination, for use by the field at large
Identify and pitch opportunities for enhancing program design and learning
Systematically document research findings using excel research templates, bibliographies/literature reviews, comprehensive interview notes
Develop structured communications (presentations, pitches, memos) to help articulate strategy and underlying rationale and analysis, including investment and business cases
Collaborate closely with “PROI” (Prevalence reduction and return-on-investment) team in designing financial assessment strategies of GFEMS’ portfolio (specifically value for money and return-on-investment); help shape other project- and sector-level plans for research and development that can generate insights for future work in a sector or geography
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, International Relations or related field with an excellent academic record, or equivalent experience
At least 2 years’ experience as a top performer in research and analysis-focused work, for the purpose of strategy or proof-of-concept development (for example, market research, economic analysis, management consulting, social science research, business plan development)
Demonstrated ability to be self-driven in research activities, and work with limited oversight towards deadlines.
Demonstrated experience and professionalism working directly with clients/stakeholders, including senior management and/or top officials in the public and private sectors
Sensitivity to the political and cultural environments of international public agencies or similarly complex environments
Experience with financial analytics such as ROI
Highly-skilled in qualitative and quantitative analysis, and written, visual, and verbal communications; proficiency in Excel and Powerpoint strongly preferred
