Position Summary

GFEMS’ approach to research is highly action-oriented and data-driven. The Fund’s research efforts will identify what works (and doesn’t) to sustainably reduce the prevalence of slavery. These lessons will be shared with the field but also applied internally to inform bigger bets towards large-scale prevalence reduction in specific industries / geographies.

A major barrier to attracting the scale and type of investment needed to fight slavery is the lack of actionable and insightful prevalence data. Specifically, the Fund needs to be able to measure prevalence of slavery at a granular enough level (i.e. the total number of people in a form of slavery in a given industry and/or geography) to influence decision making, and to monitor and evaluate the progress of its programs.

As Prevalence Manager, your key accountability is to test and build new methods to measure prevalence that can deliver robust data at a target of 10x time and cost reduction of status quo. This means creating innovative methodologies and being willing to fail fast / learn quick on what works and what doesn’t for different industry/geography combinations.

You will be responsible for a core component of successful implementation of the Fund’s strategy to understand “PROI” -- Prevalence-reduction & Return-on-Investment -- which encompasses 3 key questions:

  1. What is the absolute and relative baseline prevalence in a target community or industry, and the reduction in prevalence over time?
  2. What are the key drivers of prevalence (e.g., vulnerability factors and economic profit factors) and what approaches are most effective to leverage these drivers?
  3. Which strategies and programs yield the greatest value-for-money and return on investment?

Position Responsibilities

  • Innovate beyond existing methodologies -- define, develop, and test new methods for measuring prevalence that meet GFEMS’ objectives above
  • Results-oriented project management of baseline and endline prevalence estimates with a variety of external partners
  • Develop clear hypotheses and methods to test hypotheses on the drivers of prevalence and its reduction in specific industries/geographies
  • Support the Director of R&D in building relationships across potential research and analytics firms and individuals, to ensure GFEMS is tapping the best possible partners, including building coalitions across diverse partners where necessary
  • Manage outside partners to successful results
  • Support broader coordination across teams to ensure 3 key PROI questions are infused throughout the fund’s broader strategy, and that grantees are getting the guidance they need to execute their part in it
  • Identify ways to provide low-cost, high-value technical assistance to partners

Experience/Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in research, innovation, consulting, analysis, impact measurement, or similar function specifically; additional professional experience preferred
  • Exceptional project management across complex workstreams, including external partners
  • Skilled in partnership brokerage and co-creation across lines of difference; must be highly collaborative and a natural relationship-builder
  • Efficient multi-tasker and able to coordinate people at all levels of an organisation
  • Ability to communicate effectively across sectors and stakeholders -- between academia, nonprofit implementers, corporate and government stakeholders -- and cultural backgrounds
  • Relevant international experience; preference given to those with experience and networks in high prevalence regions (e.g., South Asia, South East Asia)
  • Track-record of entrepreneurial approaches and aptitude
  • Excellent analytical skills (financial, planning, operational) and an understanding of statistics
  • Undergraduate degree -- or equivalent experience -- required; graduate degree in relevant field preferred
